Newborn Exam

Shortly after your baby is born, a complete physical examination is done to make sure that your newborn baby is in good health. During your baby's first examination, your healthcare provider will weigh your baby and check for muscle tone, reflexes, skin colour, and will look for any injuries that could have occurred during the birth process. Your baby will also be checked for normal body temperature, heart and lung sounds, and routine medications will be offered, such as Vitamin K and possibly eye prophylaxis. If your baby has had a wet diaper or passed a bowel movement that will also be noted during the newborn exam as well as whether you and your baby have received all appropriate medications, vaccines, and screening tests.
